In 1887, members and clergy of the Presbyterian Church founded Occidental College. Today, this private, liberal arts college is considered one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country, and has produced an impressive number of Rhodes Scholars. Although Oxy loosened its ties to the Presbyterian Church in 1900, there’s still a strong presence on campus.
The Oxy Tigers are members of NCAA Division III as part of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Tigers participate in 21 varsity sports, and can boast of the longest-running football rivalry in Southern California – the Tigers first faced Pomona in 1895. Oxy has also produced seven Olympic gold medalists.
The list of Oxy alumni is impressive – President Barack Obama attended Occidental before transferring to Columbia, Ben Affleck attended Occidental in the mid-90s, and best-selling American poet Robinson Jeffers graduated from Occidental in 1905.
