As one of California’s oldest universities, Chapman University was founded in 1861 as Hesperian College – a college that admitted students of both sexes and all races — a rarity at the time. In 1920, California Christian College absorbed Hesperian College. The name was changed in 1934 in honor of C.C. Chapman, the school’s primary benefactor.
Chapman University is located in historic Old Towne Orange. This district contains several homes built before 1920 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Old Towne is a square-mile section that surrounds the original plaza. This charming area contains the county’s oldest operating soda fountain and the oldest operating bank. Orange contains the second largest number of historic buildings in the state.
