Located in the northwestern section of Thousand Oaks, California Lutheran University is a private university established by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1959. It sits on a 225-acre campus that includes 40 buildings and two stadiums. A smaller university, CLU averages about 16 students per class. The university offers 36 academic majors and 30 graduate programs.
Thousand Oaks is an idyllic setting adorned with oak trees and framed by mountains. The area was claimed by Spain in 1542. In the late 1800s, the area was part of the stagecoach route that linked Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The Stagecoach Inn, located in Newbury Park, is a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1876 and is now a historical museum that is allegedly haunted.
