The private, evangelical Christian Biola University is a liberal arts university located in La Mirada, a small city just northwest of Anaheim and about 18 miles southeast of Los Angeles. La Mirada is on the border between Orange County and Los Angeles County and is home to roughly 50,000 residents.
In 1908, oilman Lyman Stewart founded the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, with the acronym BIOLA. In 1959, the school was moved to La Mirada and in 1981, the name was officially changed to Biola University.
In addition to classes, Biola is the site of several student conferences, including the annual Torrey Memorial Bible Conference and the Missions Conference. Students are required to attend eight conference sessions and 30 chapel services per semester. The university offers 37 undergraduate degrees as well as several master’s and doctoral programs. The schools include the Talbot School of Theology, the School of Education, and the Rosemead School of Psychology, among others.
