Auburn University - Auburn, AL
Auburn University was established in 1856 in the city of Auburn, Alabama, a small, friendly university town located on the plains of eastern Alabama, approximately 50 miles east of the capital city of Montgomery.
The school became the first land-grant college in the South, and today is one of the few schools that hold the distinction of being a comprehensive land, sea and space grant institution, sprawling over more than 1,840 acres and enrolling more than 25,000 students.
Auburn has developed into one of the largest universities in the South, and allows students the opportunity to choose from more than 140 degree options in 13 schools and colleges at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels. Programs in architecture, pharmacy, veterinary science, engineering, forestry, and business have been ranked among the best in the country.
Auburn’s College of Architecture pioneered the joining of architecture and interior design curriculum with the nation’s first interior architecture degree program. The school also offered the country’s first Design Build masters degree, in collaboration with Auburn’s “Rural Studio” program founded by the late Samuel Mockbee, in which architectural students build highly creative homes for some of the poorest residents of Alabama. These efforts have been publicized by People magazine, Time, numerous architectural and construction periodicals and seen on the Oprah Winfrey show.
The 2011 edition of US News and World Report ranks Auburn as the 85th university in the nation among public and private schools and 38th among public universities. Notable alumni include Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller, author Anne Rivers Siddons and singer Toni Tennille.
