Forsyth County, North Carolina

Northwestern North Carolina, part of the Yadkin River valley, is a popular wine region. It is a beautiful location that is home to two major annual festivals: the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival and the Yadkin Valley Grape Festival. One of the counties that make up this picturesque area is Forsyth County. Carved from Stokes County in 1849, this diverse region contains history blended with rolling hills and dotted with vineyards. But it is also home to the progressive, modern city of Winston-Salem, its county seat.

Winston-Salem is the second-largest city in the region known as the Piedmont Triad. It is a college town – Winston-Salem State University (founded in 1892), Wake Forest University, Salem College (founded in 1772), Forsyth Technical Community College, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts are all located within the city.

Winston-Salem can trace its history to 1753, when a settlement founded by the Moravian Church was formed in the area. Winston and Salem were two separate towns until 1889, when the US Post Office combined the towns’ mail offices. In 1913, the hyphen was added. The area grew as an industrial center, where tobacco was produced alongside textiles and furniture. The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company formed, and a major portion of the town’s residents worked for the large factory. Today, the largest employers include Reynolds American, Inc., Wells Fargo, BB&T, and Hanesbrands Inc.

Cities and towns in Forsyth County include Tobacoville, Lewisville, Kernersville, Clemmons, Bethania, Walkertown, Winston, Vienna, Broadbay, Old Town, Abbots Creek, and South Fork.
