New York County, New York
Is it confusing to live in a city that has the same name as its state? Or does a resident simply have one less thing to remember? Someone could take a poll and find out; after all, there are seven US counties that bear the same name as the state: Arkansas County, Hawaii County, Idaho County, Iowa County, Oklahoma County, Utah County and New York County.
New York County is primarily made up of the island of Manhattan, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The boundaries of the borough are identical to those of New York County, an original county of the state of New York. Manhattan is the oldest and the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City. The borough and county consist of Manhattan Island and several small adjacent islands.
The county is the most densely-populated county in the US, and is one of the most densely-populated in the world; the third-largest of New York’s five boroughs in population. It’s also one of the wealthiest counties in the country, and is home to some of the nation’s most valuable real estate. Manhattan has a reputation as one of the most expensive areas in the United States.
A major commercial, financial and cultural center – vying with the city of London as the financial capital of the world and anchored by Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ – the area is considered the “economic engine of New York City.” Offices here account for almost two-thirds of all jobs in New York City, with commuters adding 1.34 million people to the population during the workday. The vast majority of New York’s corporate headquarters are based in Manhattan.
