Bronx County, New York

The year 1923 was a good one for Bronx County, New York – also referred to as simply the Bronx. That’s when the original Yankee Stadium opened on 161st Street and River Avenue. That same year, the Yankees brought home the first of 27 World Series Championships. The old stadium was home to many of baseball’s greatest players including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle. Named after the Dutch settler Jonas Bronck, Bronx County had been largely undeveloped farmland and wild marsh until then.

Shortly thereafter, from the 1930s to the 1950s, waves of immigrants began to settle the area; primarily Irish and Italians. They were followed by Hispanic and black residents, and at that point the Bronx, particularly the South Bronx, saw a sharp decline in population, livable housing and quality of life.

In the late 1960s and 1970s, the area became a symbol of the urban crisis; arson in the city was common as landlords burned buildings to escape the expense of repairs and upkeep on buildings under the city’s rent control.

Today, aggressive community leadership has led to replacement of many burned-out tenements by single and multifamily homes. The city has created a “Ten-Year Housing Plan” for the area, and community members are rebuilding the social, economic and environmental infrastructure. Groups affiliated with churches in the South Bronx, as well as the organization Nos Quedamos, have built a large number of homes in the Bronx.

Their efforts are successful, and ripple effects have been felt through the county; public transportation once again has riders; retail chains such as Marshalls, Staples and Target have opened stores here; and a number of bank branches have opened in the Bronx, as well.
