Middlesex County, New Jersey

Middlesex County was founded in 1675. It is an attractive county in central New Jersey with dozens of historic sites. Among them is the Ayers-Allen House, built in 1740 as the Allen House Tavern. The Buccheuch Mansion, built in 1739, is a beautiful house located along the Raritan River. Rutgers Preparatory School was established in 1766, making it one of the oldest prep schools in the US.

Two major universities are located in Middlesex County: Rutgers University and Princeton University’s Forrestal campus. Rutgers is one of only nine Colonial Colleges, meaning it was founded before the American Revolution. It was built in 1766 as Queen’s College. It is one of only two of the Colonial colleges that became public universities.

Princeton is one of the eight Ivy League universities as well as a Colonial College. Established in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, the campus was originally located in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It was moved to Princeton in 1756. The James Forrestal Campus, located in Plainsboro, is less than three miles from the main campus, located across Carnegie Lake.

Middlesex County features more than 20 parks and conservation areas. It contains many popular New Jersey cities, including East Brunswick, Middlesex, New Brunswick, and South Brunswick.
