Also sometimes referred to as District Four, Dayton’s Bluff is a neighborhood in southeastern St. Paul. This Ramsey County community has a ZIP code of 55106. The neighborhood boundaries are somewhat inconspicuous, but the community is generally considered to extend to Phalen Boulevard on the north and to Warner Road/County Highway 36 on the south. Its eastern boundary is Birmingham Street. Panye Avenue constitutes much of its western border. Several major roadways, including Interstate 94 and US Highways 10, 12, and 61, run east-west through the southern half of Dayton’s Bluff.
This community is largely residential suburbia. Many of the homes were built more than 100 years ago. Quite a few of the neighborhood’s original homes are still standing, including brick manors, Victorian-style houses, and brownstones. Dayton’s Bluff is undergoing significant transformation as part of an ongoing St. Paul revitalization project.
Mounds Park, near the neighborhood’s southern boundary, hosts several aboriginal mounds. From the top of these mounds, which span upwards of 18 feet, residents and visitors can take in a beautiful view of the city and the river to the south. Nearly the entire southern border of Dayton’s Bluff is parkland and municipal forest.
Also within the community bounds is Dayton’s Bluff Recreational Area, situated at the convergence of Conway Street and North Mendota Street, near the neighborhood’s elementary school. Along the community’s western boundary is Swede Hollow Park. Dayton’s Bluff residents have no shortage of options when it comes to taking in the scenic beauty of the neighborhood and enjoying outdoor activities.
Schools within the neighborhood include Dayton’s Bluff Elementary School at 262 Bates Avenue, American Indian Magnet School at 1075 3rd Street East, Twin Cities Academy at 835 East 5th Street, and Harding High School at 1540 6th Street East. You’ll also find Metropolitan State University at 700 7th Street East and the St. Paul Public Library at 645 7th Street East.
