Fort Bliss, TX

Headquartered in El Paso, Texas and extending into New Mexico, Fort Bliss is the second largest Army installation, covering about 1,700 square miles. It is adjacent to the White Sands Missile Range. With one of the largest contiguous tracts of virtually unrestricted airspace in the US, Fort Bliss airspace is utilized for missile and artillery training and testing.

Fort Bliss was built in 1849, and was briefly controlled by the Confederate States during the Civil War. Fort Bliss National Cemetery covers over 80 acres of the post. Although the base wasn’t established until the late 1940s, the cemetery dates to 1833.
