In 2009, McGuire Air Force Base merged with other area bases to become Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, although it is still often referred to as McGuire AFB. The base was built in 1941 and has been in use ever since. It is located roughly 16 miles southeast of Trenton and is home to the 87th Air Base Wing.
Renting an apartment near McGuire AFB will lead you to New Hanover Township and North Hanover Township – both towns contain a portion of the base. New Hanover dates back to 1723 when it was formed by Royal Charter from parts of two existing townships. In addition to McGuire AFB, New Hanover contains portions of Fort Dix, as well. In contrast to New Hanover, North Hanover is relatively young – it wasn’t formed until 1905. Other nearby communities include New Egypt, Chesterfield Township, Mansfield, Columbus, Pemberton Township, Lakehurst, and Manchester Township.
