Situated on the east side of Great Falls, Malmstrom Air Force Base has been in operation since 1941. It is part of the Air Force Global Strike Command and is home to the 341st Missile Wing. The base, which began as Great Falls Air Force Base, was renamed in 1955 to honor WWII pilot Colonel Einar Axel Malmstrom, who died in a plane crash in 1954.
