Fort Shafter, the oldest military base on the island of Oahu, is over 100 years old. Built in 1905, Fort Shafter is located just northwest of Honolulu, the state capital and Hawaii’s largest city. The base contains the Palm Circle Historic District, which is also a National Historic Landmark. This historic district contained the headquarters of the commanding general, his staff, and other forces during WWII.
Honolulu is a busy and beautiful city, sandwiched between sculpted green mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It is a major financial hub, but the economy also includes tourism, military, manufacturing, government, and more. Anywhere in Honolulu will be within commuting distance of the base, but consider the northern neighborhoods for apartments close to Fort Shafter.
