Presidio of Monterey, CA

The Presidio of Monterey is the only Presidio in California to still have an active military installation. Spain established the royal fort (presidio) in 1770 as one of several presidios established in the western US. The Royal Presidio Chapel, the oldest stone building in California, was built in 1794 and is still in use. It is the only existing building of the original Monterey Presidio, and it is a National Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the Presidio of Monterey is home to the US Department of Defense’s Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). Considered one of the best schools in the country for foreign language instruction, the Presidio of Monterey is home to roughly 3,500 personnel from every branch of government.

Monterey is a beautiful location for an apartment in the Presidio of Monterey area. It served as the capital of Spain’s (and later Mexico’s) Alta California from 1777 to 1846. It is a beautiful area with several attractions, such as Fisherman’s Wharf, the Monterey Jazz Festival, Cannery Row, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
