Home to the 19th Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base was built in 1955 and is part of the Air Mobility Command and is a training base forC-130 pilots, navigators, flight engineers, and loadmasters for all US military branches. Little Rock AFB is actually located about 15 miles northeast of Little Rock in Jacksonville.
Established in 1870, Jacksonville is a suburban city considered part of the Little Rock metro area. In 1941, the city was home to the Arkansas Ordnance Plant. After WWII, the AOP was disbanded and a good portion became Little Rock AFB. Part of that original structure still exists and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
If you don’t mind a commute from your apartment near Little Rock AFB, then Little Rock is a great city to consider, as well. As the capital and the state’s largest city, there’s plenty to see and do in Little Rock. Museums include the Arkansas Arts Center, the Historic Arkansas Museum, and the William J. Clinton Presidential Center. Other attractions include Robinson Center Music Hall, the historic Quapaw Quarter, and the Arkansas Arboretum.
