Wrapping around its county seat of Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County is located in southeastern Michigan, directly west of Detroit. The county is part of the Detroit-Warren-Flint metro area. First settled by French fur traders around 1809, the county wasn’t officially established until 1826.
The county seat, Ann Arbor, is a college town in a big way. This is home to the University of Michigan and the presence of this important university is everywhere. Businesses find the high-tech atmosphere and highly-qualified graduates the university provides through its research and development a major draw to the area. The university moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 from Detroit.
Ann Arbor is not just a fun, chic college town – it is a beautiful city with over 150 parks. The Huron River flows through the city, and the city is heavily forested – it is often referred to as “Tree Town because it contains over 50,000 trees. The university operates Nichols Arboretum along the Huron River, which was designed in 1906.
Washtenaw County contains several cities, villages, and townships. Cities include Ypsilanti and Chelsea, villages include Dexter and Manchester, and townships include Bridgewater, Saline, Salem, Lodi, Lima, Sylvan, and Webster.
