Ingham County, Michigan
Ingham County, Michigan is proudly home to the Lansing Lugnuts, a Class A minor league baseball team, as well as Lansing Community College, the Thomas M. Cooley Law School and the Michigan State University Spartans.
Founded in 1855, Michigan State University (more commonly called MSU) is a public research university in East Lansing, Michigan. MSU pioneered the studies of packaging, hospitality business, telecommunication and music therapy; and today its study-abroad program is the largest of any single-campus university in the country, offering more than 200 programs in more than 60 countries on all continents including Antarctica.
Considered one of America’s public ivy universities, MSU is the ninth-largest university in the US, with 47,800 students and 2,954 faculty members. The school’s nuclear physics, engineering, political science, business, journalism, education, law and osteopathic medicine programs are among the nation’s best. MSU, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University together created the University Research Corridor in 2006 in order to strengthen Michigan’s economy by speeding up the technology transfer, making resources more accessible and helping attract new jobs to the state.
The MSU campus also features a number of notable attractions. The Talbert and Leota Abrams Planetarium serves as an astronomy and space science education resource center for central Michigan, supporting astronomy teaching on campus as well as offering a variety of planetarium shows to the public.
Other notable sites in Ingham County include the historic Turner-Dodge House on East North Street in Lansing. Built by James and Marion Turner in 1858, the Smith-Turner House is of the Italianate and Queen Anne styles, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in a garden setting along the Grand River, approximately one mile north of Michigan’s State Capitol Building, a visit makes a nice walk from downtown or the City Market along the city’s River Walk. Old Town and its turn-of-the-century buildings are in the same area.
The county is named for Samuel D. Ingham, the US Secretary of the Treasury under President Andrew Jackson. It has a total area of 561 square miles. According to the most recent census, Ingham County’s population is 280,895. Its county seat is Mason. Lansing, Michigan is the only state capital in the nation that is not also a county seat.
