Fans of vintage architecture will enjoy Irving Park. This quiet, largely residential neighborhood features a number of historic and architecturally-notable homes dating back to the Victorian era; among the oldest is the circa 1856 John Gray Home, at the corner of Grace Street and Kostner Avenue. Several others date from the 1870s and 1880s.
Bounded by Montrose Avenue, Irving Park Road and the North Branch of the Chicago River, Irving Park is actually comprised of several smaller neighborhoods including Old Irving Park, The Triangle, Independence Park, Addison Mall, Mayfair, West Walker and the Villa District.
The Villa District, a residential wedge that extends from the corner of Pulaski Road and Addison Street north to the Kennedy Expressway, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It contains more than 120 unique and architecturally-significant Craftsman and Bungalow homes resting on boulevard-style streets.
The early 1980s was a time of rebirth for Irving Park, when a wider audience discovered the area. The Irving Park Historical Society was formed in 1984 to preserve the neighborhood’s heritage and its irreplaceable architecture.
Irving Park is home to a number of popular ethnic restaurants, such as the well-known and pricy Thai eatery Arun’s, on Kedzie north of Irving Park Road. Mirabell, on Addison Street, is an Austrian-German restaurant; Little Bucharest, on Elston, features Romanian cuisine. At a neighborhood favorite, Sabatino’s on Irving Park at Kenneth Avenue, diners are serenaded by strolling musicians.
Neighborhood transportation options include Union Pacific trains, CTA bus service on Cicero, Montrose, and Irving Park Road, and the Kennedy Expressway and El Blue Line which traverse the neighborhood.
Schools include Belding Elementary School, St Viator School, Irving Park Middle School, Schurz High School and Chicago National College.
