Euclid Avenue runs through the heart of downtown Ontario, California. It was the first street created in this city and was considered a “centerpiece” by the founder, Canadian engineer George Chaffey.
The street, established in 1882, was named for the ancient Greek mathematician Chaffey idolized. It’s a good choice for a name considering that the city has a geometric quality to it. Built on a slight incline, Euclid Avenue is eight miles long and two hundred feet wide with a tree-lined parkway running through its center.
The parkway is more than just the center of the street. It has pedestrian walkways meandering under pepper trees. It is also a gathering place. Free concerts and presentations are held on a gazebo stage. This stage gives Ontario a “small town feel,” despite having a population of over 150,000 people, a major shopping mall (Ontario Mills), freeway (Interstate 10) and an international airport.
To add to that small town feel, many of the residential streets are filled with vintage homes. Some are small, one-story bungalows that were first built in the 1930s and ’40s. Others are two-story Spanish-tiled villas or ranchos dating back to Ontario’s early days.
Downtown is more than just one street. Within its borders (San Antonia Avenue to the west; Campus Avenue to the east; West 6th street to the north; and Mission Boulevard to the South), it has Ontario Amtrak Station. Here, one can catch a train to downtown Los Angeles – more than 35 miles away.
The city’s first high school, Chaffey High School, is located in downtown, as well as the Latino Art Museum, Ontario Hispanic Chamber, and Ontario Museum of History and Art. Many of these attractions are accessible by the neighborhood’s main street.
