Willowbrook lies within an unincorporated area of South Los Angeles, an area with about 35,000 residents. It’s bounded by South Figueroa Street on the west and North Alameda Street on the east. Both the north and south ends of the neighborhood have jagged borders. East 120th Street and the Century Freeway (Highway 105) bound the neighborhood to the north, West Rosecrans Avenue, West El Segundo Boulevard, and East Oris Street border on the south.
Two notable branches of the Los Angeles Public Library system lie in the neighborhood. Opened in 1913, the Willowbrook branch was the first library in the Lost Angeles system. The library moved to a new location in 1987, where it now offers activities like belly dancing fitness, sushi-making demos, and painting and drawing classes.
The A. C. Bilbrew Library offers a book collection and a wealth of community events, and has hosted the Black Resource Center since 1978. The Center contains a renowned collection of material aimed at preserving the historical, cultural, and social heritage of African Americans.
Additionally, the A. C. Bilbrew branch has hosted a large African American History Month celebration every year since 1980. As part of the celebrations, public figures like Coretta Scott King, Cab Calloway, and Ray Charles have all made appearances.
Several parks occupy the neighborhood, including the 94-acre Earvin “Magic” Johnson Recreation Area. The recreation area has two lakes for fishing, a walking path, soccer fields, picnic sites, and play areas for children.
