Once a thriving industrial city founded in 1886 by entrepreneur Enoch Ensley, this historic neighborhood offers apartments that connect to Birmingham's rich industrial heritage. Now part of Birmingham proper since its annexation in 1910, Ensley was once home to extensive blast furnaces and pioneered the open-hearth process of steel making in the Birmingham District. The area gained recognition when local musician Erskine Hawkins wrote the hit song "Tuxedo Junction," named after the intersection of streetcar lines that made this neighborhood a transportation and entertainment center.
Today, Ensley is minutes from downtown Birmingham, offering convenient access to the city center. The neighborhood features historic architecture and a layout designed by noted sanitary engineer Edwin Waring, Jr., who implemented one of the earliest systems of separate storm and sanitary sewers. With rental rates typically below Birmingham's average, Ensley offers a practical location with access to major transportation routes and Birmingham's amenities.
