Casper, Wyoming isn’t named for a famous friendly ghost. The name for the city was derived from a former fort, Fort Caspar, which was built along the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails during the mid-1800s at the location where ferries carried the travelers across the North Platte River. A trading post and bridge was eventually built at the ferry site. The city itself was formed east of the former fort as a trailhead for the Wyoming Central Railway in 1888. The reason the city is spelled Casper instead of Caspar? A typo when the town’s name was officially registered.

Casper was a rough-and-tumble, cowboys-and-gunslingers town during its infancy, and its “Wild West” roots are still evident even as Casper has developed into the second-largest city in Wyoming, with a strong economy that developed from oil and has evolved into banking, energy, and commerce.

The rugged landscape includes Casper Mountain, a great place for hiking, camping, skiing, and snowmobiling. Casper features an impressive 261 acres of developed parks featuring activities such as walking and jogging paths, ball courts and fields, fishing, a white water park, an adventure park, museums, boat ramps, picnic areas, and more.

Another popular pastime in Casper is golf – the area is home to five golf courses, including one municipal course. And if you are choosing a Casper apartment to rent because of its Western heritage, you’ll appreciate the rodeo scene – Casper is home to the College National Finals Rodeo. Sports fans will also enjoy indoor football’s Wyoming Cavalry.
