Spokane is the largest city in eastern Washington with almost 200 thousand residents. The city is home to colleges, museums, state-of-the-art medical facilities, and picturesque neighborhoods. In the 99224 ZIP code of Spokane is the sprawling neighborhood of West Spokane. The neighborhood includes residential homes, apartments, businesses, city parks, and two colleges.
The northern edge of West Spokane begins in the area of Downriver Park, which has the Spokane River Centennial Trail running along its south border. The 37-mile trail is a paved trail that runs from the Idaho State line to Washington’s Nine Mile Falls.
The campus of Spokane Falls Community College and the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute are also in the northern area of West Spokane. South of West Fort George Wright Drive and both campuses is a small residential area. The winding streets intersect and then connect with West River Ridge Boulevard.
Continuing through West Spokane, south of Riverside Memorial Park and South Government Way, residents can find the Indian Canyon Park. The area adjacent to its eastern side is primarily residential properties on smaller lots. There is easy access to the park from the neighborhood, including an entrance off West Fifth Avenue. The 155-acre park is a conservation area with trails and equestrian stables.
Adjacent to Indian Canyon Park, nestled in between West Hartson Avenue and West Seventh Avenue is the Whittier Playground. An open green space with a ball field, the Whittier Playground is surrounded by residential homes and is located on a city bus route.
On the far southern edge of West Spokane is the John A. Finch Arboretum. Located on 65-acres of hilly woodland, the arboretum’s collection of trees includes a multitude of both native and cultivated species that are able to grow within the climate of Spokane. Admission to the Finch Arboretum is free.
