On the eastern edge of the state of Washington near the state of Idaho is the city of Spokane. Originally called Spokane Falls, the city is home to approximately 200,000 people. In its 99203 zip code is the neighborhood of Rockwood. Named for the winding Rockwood Boulevard that ambles through the area, the boulevard is of historic significance and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Rockwood is located south of Interstate 90 and north of Twenty-Ninth Avenue, just south of the city’s downtown. One of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, Rockwood is a mix of residential homes, local businesses, schools and city parks. The Rockwood area’s design was inspired by the landscape ideals of famed architect Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of New York City’s Central Park.
Olmsted’s sons were employed by Spokane to design the area of Rockwood in 1913. Their fluid, natural layout adheres to their father’s design ideals and gives the neighborhood its elegant, timeless look. Rockwood is a place for scenic walks, the boulevards curving and the landscaping spotlighting natural elements.
Manito Park on East Seventeenth Avenue is one of Spokane’s most popular parks and garden areas, and it’s located on the western edge of Rockwood. Established in 1904, the park’s gardens have been recognized nationally. There are five gardens including the Rose Hill garden, named number one in the U.S. by All-American Rose Selections. The Japanese Garden was designed by landscape architect Nagao Sakurai. It is a symbol of the friendship between the city of Spokane and its sister city, Nishinomiya.
Other parks within walking distance of Rockwood include Lincoln Park, Comstock Park, Cannon Hill Park and Pioneer Park. On the northern edge of Rockwood is the Grant Playground and mini-park. Adjacent to Grant Elementary School, the park has tennis and basketball courts.
