The northern and western border of the Chief Garry Park neighborhood is East Upriver Drive and follows the Spokane River. The eastern border is defined by the boundary of Felts Field. This World War II base was originally the passenger airport, replaced by the Spokane International Airport in 1946. The buildings at Felt’s Field are on the National Register of Historic Places. The southern border is the railroad right-of-way, just below East Trent Avenue.
This is quite a diverse area. East Trent Drive is the industrial area. Most of the homes in this neighborhood were built in the late 1940s and early 1950s and are a mix of single-family homes and multi-family units. There are newer apartment complexes on the northern border near the river. Shopping and dining can be found on East Madison Street. The Spokane Transit System has routes throughout the area.
The Spokane Community College is on the northern border at North Greene Street and the Stevens Elementary School is on East Madison Avenue.
Children will enjoy the playground at the pocket park on East Desmet Avenue. On East Madison Avenue, residents will find Chief Garry Park. This park has baseball diamonds and a play area for the kids. There are picnic tables and large shade trees. There is also the newer Parkwater Neighborhood Park at the end of Felt’s Field.
For walking and biking, Centennial Trails runs the length of the neighborhood on East Upriver Drive. This inviting tree-lined path is right at the edge of the Spokane River. The trail is 37 miles long, begins at the Idaho border, and ends at Nine Mile Falls, Washington. The Chief Garry Park neighborhood is a great place to be for a well-rounded lifestyle.
