West End was once more residential than industrial but has given way to larger warehouses and the newer city offices. The area is bounded on the north by the Norfolk Southern Railroad right-of-way and Marshall Avenue to the south. The area runs between 5th Street to the west and 10th Street to the east. Most of the remaining homes are on the western side of this neighborhood.
Many of the services for the residents of Roanoke are located here as well as some of the fine arts. The Roanoke City Government is located on 8th Street. The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra on Luck Avenue offers a full season of concerts to delight residents. The Jefferson Center Foundation is home to several groups that range from nonprofit groups to arts organizations. The Council of Community Services focuses on health and human services and links people with resources. The YMCA is just down the street. Transportation throughout the area is provided by the Greater Roanoke Transit Company.
The historic homes in West End still reflect the charm of the area. There are several churches in the community. Just south of Marshall Avenue are three big parks. All three run together and create a giant playground for the residents. Highland Park is 32 acres and includes the Dog Park. Vic Thomas Park is 15 acres. Wasena Park is 31 acres and had the Roanoke Skate Park. There is a small pocket park on 10th Street with playground equipment for the children.
With the amenities in the neighborhood and Interstate 581 running just to the west, this is a great place to enjoy all that Roanoke has to offer.
