The southernmost neighborhood in the city of Roanoke, Southern Hills is a recent addition to the city, annexed in 1976. However, being bordered by major transportation routes, including US 220 and Mill Mountain Parkway, it provides residents with ready access to all parts of the city, including downtown Roanoke.
Along US 220, the neighborhood is more commercially oriented and urban, while the section of Southern Hills between Griffin and Van Winkle Roads tends to be more residential and rural, with lots of wooded space. At the extreme southern end of Southern Hills lies a rock quarry.
Recent developments, particularly Pheasant Ridge and The Summit, have introduced more upscale housing along with more population growth.
Southern Hills has ready access to plenty of green space, including an approach to the Blue Ridge Mountains via the Blue Ridge Parkway. The most prominent park within the Southern Hills neighborhood is Mill Mountain.
Overlooking the city of Roanoke, the park’s most notable feature is the giant neon star at its summit. The park attracts area residents and visitors for its outstanding valley views. The Mill Mountain Greenway is also popular with area hikers, and many residents visit Mill Mountain Park for its zoo, which features some rare animals. Originally designed as a private children’s zoo, today it concentrates on its collection of animals from North and South America.
Tanglewood Mall is a popular shopping destination for Southern Hills residents. This upscale shopping center features a beautiful interior with plenty of retail space along with a movie complex and plenty of dining options. The mall frequently features family events throughout the year, often in partnership with the city’s parks department or local area museums.
