The Roundhill Neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia developed right after World War II, with homes built in the 1950s and 1960s. The neighborhood still reflects the conventional values of that time period. It was annexed from Roanoke County in 1949.
Roundhill is bordered on the north by Hershberger Road NW and 10th Street NW to the south. The eastern border is Williamson Road NW and State Highway 220 to the west. Within this area are single family homes and multi-unit apartments.
Roundhill’s claim to fame is the Valley View Mall that opened in 1985. The enormous mall is home to nearly every store that is nationwide and every name brand restaurant chain. It has a Macy’s and a Wal-Mart. There is a Taco Bell and an Olive Garden. The Mall also has a 16 screen movie theater.
The Roanoke Regional Airport is not in the Roundhill neighborhood but it sits on Hershberger Road NW. Directly across the street from the Mall is on Valley View Boulevard is the Huff Lane Micro Village Magnet School. The school has lighted tennis and basketball courts, two lighted baseball fields, and a play area for smaller children.
The Valley View Mall is not the only shopping in the area. Shopping abounds on the streets that border this neighborhood. The Roanoke Transit System provides transportation to the mall and all the surrounding areas.
Roundhill is one of the neighborhoods where the residents don’t have to go far to enjoy all the Roanoke has to offer. It’s right in their backyard.
