Along the south bank of the Roanoke River, and southeast of downtown Roanoke, Virginia is the neighborhood of Riverdale. Riverdale consists of small ranch, bungalow and cottage-style homes on gently-rolling terrain. Apartment complexes nearby include Totera Ridge Apartments, Edgehill Estate Apartments and Summit at Roanoke. Roanoke itself lies between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and southeast and the Allegheny Mountains to the north and west. A standalone mountain, Mill Mountain is inside the city limits of Roanoke, close to the downtown area.
Schools serving the area in and around Riverdale include Mount Pleasant Elementary School, Crystal Spring Elementary School and Garden City Elementary School. Foodies is a cooking school that puts emphasis on cooking from scratch. They also offer “Grab and Go” meal kits complete with cooking instructions.
The elegant and award-winning Library Restaurant features candle-lit tables and imported dinnerware. Since 1979, the Library has won the “Roanoker Best Service Award”. They have won the DiRona “Best Restaurant of North America” award since 1993.
Macado’s is a popular nightspot for live music. They also dish up entrees, sandwiches, salads and appetizers, which have been labeled the best in Roanoke. The décor at Macado’s includes black and white photos, murals, antiques, nostalgia, and palm trees.
At the Dixie Caverns, there are tours that go up and into the mountain. Campgrounds are available and there is a pottery shop on site. Another place to visit is the 224-acre Booker T. Washington National Monument, which was a tobacco farm at the time that Washington grew up there. The park has a visitor center, nature trails and picnic facilities, in addition to the restored farm buildings.
