River Land appears to be a community defined by natural barriers. To the north, the small and shallow Roanoke River separates this residential community from the industrial districts of Roanoke, Virginia. To the south, the Mill Mountain (within Mill Mountain Park) further isolates the community from the rest of the city.
Yet, despite this perceived isolation, there are enough roads to connect River Land with the rest of the city. Also, this community is not far from several vital landmarks and attractions.
Despite being named for its location next to a river, the biggest landmark in River Land is Mill Mountain Park. The area is a mountain with a peak surpassing 1,600 feet above sea level. The area, in many respects, is a mountain wilderness in the middle of an urban area.
The park has a few roads. J.P Fishburn Parkway runs along its eastern base. Sylvan Road heads south from River Land up toward the peak before it turns into Prospect Road. Along this latter route, one can find Mill Mountain Zoo.
Riverland Road (Highway 116) is the main route in River Land. It starts a block away from where the Roanoke River bends to the south. It continues eastward past the 9th Street Bridge to Bennington Street. Here, outside the eastern border (9th Street) is Bennington Place Shopping Center.
The west side of River Land has the most attractions. Within the community is Roanoke Carilion Memorial Hospital. Across the river, via Walnut Avenue Bridge are Virginia Tech Carilion School and Health Center, Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, Jefferson College of Health Sciences, A Virginia National Guard barracks, and Roanoke Parks and Recreation center.
The latter contains a football and baseball field, as well as Roanoke Basic Adult Education School and the Roanoke Horticulturist Center.
