The Mecca Gardens neighborhood in Roanoke, Virginia, has lots of open areas defined by the hilly terrain. The homes in this area are single family and duplexes. There are newer apartment complexes nestled in the hills just off of Orange Avenue NE, the western border. The northern border is shared by the Eastgate neighborhood. The eastern border is the railroad right-of-way dipping down on Gates Lane to Mountainview Rd and back to the right-of-way on Ruddell Road to Berkley Road NE. This is also the boundary of the city of Vinton. The southern border is Gus Nicks Boulevard NE.
Mecca Gardens is sparsely populated but anything that the residents could want is on Orange Avenue NE. There are places to dine, fast food, and shopping areas. Given it’s proximity to Vinton, residents can take advantage of all the amenities that Vinton has to offer. There is the Municipal Swimming Pool, the Farmer’s Market, and the Wolf Creek Gateway trails for hiking and biking. Mecca Gardens has many churches and the Herman L. Horn Elementary School is on Mountainview Rd. Transportation is provided by the Roanoke Transit Service and runs on Orange Avenue NE to all parts of Roanoke and Vinton.
Thrasher Park is on the border of the Mecca Gardens neighborhood on Gus Nicks Boulevard NE. This 22-acre park has tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball field, and a football field. The playground has a newer structure with a twisty slide and swings. The picnic areas are shaded. There is also a community center that is available for events.
Mecca Gardens is largely unspoiled by commercial areas and the low density housing makes it a desirable place to live.
