Gilmer is a neighborhood in the 24016 zip code of central Roanoke, Virginia that started as a suburb back in the 1920s. The architecture and layout of Gilmer still reflect this time period. Gilmer lies north of the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks and is bounded by Moorman Avenue. It is also contained by 14th Street to the west and 5th Street to the east.
At first, industrial development crept into the early residential neighborhoods, especially on Shenandoah Avenue and Centre Avenue along the railroad tracks. However, many of those single-family homes, left vacant by progress, have been rehabilitated and repopulated, while retaining their historic appearance. Updated zoning regulations are in place for Gilmer. These ensure that new construction in this area does not inhibit the existing character, while strengthening the fabric of the community.
Dwellings include single-family homes, duplexes, apartments and converted multi-family residences. Most of Gilmer has well-populated residential areas. However, eastern and northern fringes of Gilmer along Moorman Road, 5th Street, and 11th Street, are mainly commercial areas of varying degrees.
Since Gilmer in Roanoke provides retail and service establishments scattered throughout residential areas, it is suitable for those who enjoy walking around the corner to get their daily needs. The traditional and cultural fabric of Gilmer is strong, with nine churches and other cultural resources situated throughout the neighborhood. These include Loudon Park, Saint John’s Grand Masonic Lodge, and the former Hunton Life Saving Crew Building.
Gilmer at Roanoke also houses the historic City Fire Station 5 and four community service organizations. These include the Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization (NNEO). Established in 1980, the NNEO is a local community development organization, which has a strong hand in Gilmer’s preservation and progress alike.
