The neighborhood of Fallon, on the southeast side of Roanoke, Virginia, is one of the oldest communities in the area, dating back to the late 1800s. It is known for its historic architecture and railway history. Visiting here is like taking a step back in time. It was originally started as a community for employees of the Norfolk Southern Roanoke Locomotive Shop, which is a leading historic resource for the area. Members of the railway community were instrumental in changing the name of the city from Big Lick to Roanoke in 1882.
Residents do their everyday shopping at nearby Parkside Plaza. Downtown Roanoke, which has many more services and attractions, is not far away. Fallon is a smaller neighborhood easily traversed on foot or by using the local mass transit system.
Fallon Park boasts one of only two public pools in the area, along with extensive green space and sports facilities. Nearby Tinker Creek, immortalized in the nature writings of Annie Dilliard, has areas for fishing and boating, as well as Tinker Creek Greenway Trail for hiking and biking.
Sports fans in Fallon have a lot from which to choose, from local sports and recreation to ice hockey at Virginia Tech and basketball at Virginia Western. Fallon is also close to the Roanoke City Market District, whose many attractions include the Science Museum and Hopkins Planetarium. The community is currently revitalizing several of its areas as it appeals for inclusion on the National Registry of Historic Places. With one foot in the past, Fallon gives visitors and residents a taste of days gone by, while still looking forward.
