The Fair Land neighborhood is located in north central Roanoke, just across Interstate 581. It is bounded by Aspen Street on the north, Brooklyn Drive to the east, and Kirkland Drive to the west. Neighboring communities include Miller Court/Arrowood, Roundhill, and Melrose-Rugby. A major portion of these neighborhoods consists of ranch-style, single-family homes that were built during the 1950s.
Outdoor enthusiasts of all types will want to visit the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, which are slightly more than twp miles away from the Fair Land community. These attractions have activities for everyone. History lovers will enjoy visiting and viewing sites that played a significant role in the westward passage for pioneers, as well as in both American Revolution and the Civil War. Hikers and backpackers will be eager to explore the park’s 2,000 miles of trails, while fishermen will enjoy trying to snag one of the more than 100 species of fish from Jackson River, including rainbow and brown trout.
Mountain bikers have more than 200 miles of paved and dirt trails to challenge their riding skills. Boaters have the option to paddle down the Shenandoah River on either the leisurely south fork or try their hands at the raging rapids along the north fork.
For a healthy and unique dining experience, Fair Land residents pay a visit to Doug and Evie’s Original Wildflour restaurant, located two miles away, in the middle of the Old Southwest Historic District. Opened in 1996 with a goal of providing healthy meals from scratch by using the best ingredients and unique recipes, the restaurant has since expanded. It provides catering services and has a small bakery that produces a range of made-to-order cakes, including custom wedding cakes.
