Westend is known as a somewhat bustling part of town in Lynchburg on Route 221, surrounded by Richmond Street and Memorial Avenue. Lynchburg Stadium is in Westend where many athletic events are played. In addition to this stadium, Lynchburg Hillcats Baseball Club City Stadium is in Westend as well. The Lynchburg Hillcats, a minor league baseball team, are a Class High-A team in the Carolina league and a farm team of the Atlanta Braves.
Founded in 1903, independent and co-educational Lynchburg College sits a short distance from Westend. The school has twice been named by the John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges as one of the top 100 colleges nationwide. The school was also ranked in the top tier of southern colleges and universities by U.S. News World Report.
Outdoor parks in the area include Miller Park and College Park, which both have playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic areas, camp grounds, and trails for the outdoor enthusiasts.
There is no shortage of public libraries in Westend. Lynchburg Public Library and Jones Memorial Library both call Westend home. Both libraries have the latest technologies, recent book releases, story time for children, and other monthly events.
For shopping options, Westend offers Westover Shopping Center. The shopping center is near Food Lion off of Oakley Avenue and Memorial Drive. Restaurants in Westend include regular favorites like Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, Bill’s Pastry and Cake Shop, Subway, Burger King, and Thai 99.
