The Virginia Hills neighborhood of Lynchburg, Virginia, is located southwest of the city. The area is family-friendly with schools, churches, and neighborhood stores. Families find the 18-acre Miller Park, located at 2100 Park Avenue, the perfect place for a picnic. There are many picnic tables and several picnic shelters available scattered among the trees. The swimming pool is very popular in the summer months. The park, the oldest in the city, dates back to 1862 when the original track of land was donated by Samuel Miller, for whom the park is named. His desire was to preserve as many of the native trees as possible on a tract of land where residents and visitors could enjoy the outdoors.
A walking tour of the 12-block area known as the Federal Hill Historic District provides a glimpse into Lynchburg’s elegant past. Lynchburg was once one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the nation as a result of its tobacco trade. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 33-acre area is in the heart of Lynchburg. Free-standing brick homes including French Second Empire architectural style, early 19 century, Edwardian homes of the early 20th century, and early federal town houses have been preserved.
