From its northern and southeastern portions, the neighborhood is in between four major shopping hubs. The Fort Hill Village Shopping Center is on the northwest along Fort Avenue, while the Chestnut Hills Shopping Center is on the northeast along Wards Road. Going down further south of Wards Road leads to the River Ridge Mall Shopping Center and the Seven Hills Shopping Center.

The part of Fort Avenue near Sheffield houses a long stretch of commercial establishments including the Lynchburg Pawn Shop, Sakura Japanese Steak-Seafood, Lincare, Lynchburg Music Center, Suntrust Bank, and Virginia Credit Union Services. The western side of the neighborhood after Fort Avenue is mainly a residential area with a number of other planned communities.

Sheffield’s eastern side is mainly a commercial area filled with shopping and dining establishments, schools, and banks. Aside from the two major shopping centers, it also houses the higher education schools Liberty University, Central Virginia Community College, and Old Dominion University. The area is also surrounded by other smaller shops and dining spots as well.

Residents find it convenient to travel to and from the Lynchburg Regional Airport, also locally referred to as the Preston Glenn Field. This public airport is easily reached through Wards Road, right after Liberty University. The Cedar Hills Golf Course is also in proximity to the airport when going a little further south.

Sheffield’s northwest side provides easy access to the Sandysky Park and Perrymount Park. Going a little further north leads to the Lynchburg College, which is also beside the College Lake. Sports enthusiasts are also a few miles away from the Lynchburg Stadium along Fort Avenue.
