The historic neighborhood of Sandusky is characterized by quiet streets with well appointed turn-of-the-century homes. With beautiful landscaping and well-kept homes, this neighborhood is one of the most outstanding in the city.
The most prominent landmark in the neighborhood is Sandusky House, a two-story brick home dating to 1808, which served as a headquarters for the Union Army in 1864 during the Battle of Lynchburg. The Federal-style home once housed two important men who later went on to become president, Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley.
Its importance during the Civil War is reflected in its current purpose as a Civil War museum on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it is also the starting point for a Civil War Trail, which includes Sandusky House and 10 other Civil War sites in Lynchburg, including Forts Early and McCausland, a Quaker Meeting House, museums, cemeteries, and Lynchburg’s Point of Honor.
Many other important historic points of interest lie within a short distance of Sandusky, including Appomattox Courthouse, where General Lee surrendered, the birthplace of Booker T. Washington, and Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest.
Sandusky residents, like others in the Lynchburg area, have easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a stunning mountainous parkland rated “America’s favorite drive.” Closer to home, community residents can enjoy Sandusky Park, whose most important feature is a multi-use trail for walking, running, inline skating, and biking. The trail runs alongside Black Water Creek and ends at athletic fields, where soccer is played.
Residents have great neighborhood shopping at Fort Hill Village Shopping Center, which also features a bowling center and Post Office in addition to retail stores. Other area shopping includes Boonsboro Shopping Center and River Ridge Shopping Mall, with more than 80 stores.
