Residents of Heritage Hills are proud of the connection to history in their community. Thomas Jefferson built his private retreat in this neighborhood west of Lynchburg in 1806. The home, Popular Forest, can be found just off of Graves Mills Road. The original plantation covered 4,800 acres and was his getaway from Monticello for 20 years. He once wrote that “It is the most valuable of my possessions.” The home is one of only two designed and built by Jefferson and the first in the country erected in the shape of an octagon. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, and has been open for visitors since 1986 as a historic museum with hands-on displays for children.
Residents enjoy shopping at the Candler’s Station Mall, located nearby on Candler’s Mountain Road. The 270,000 square foot shopping center has 26 stores including Staples and TJ Maxx. Multiple restaurants are available in the community including popular chains and local favorites.
Outdoor activities available include golf at Popular Forest Golf Course. This public course has nine holes and a 50 tee driving range. Another popular site is the 59 acre Heritage Park, built by the city as a combined use facility for Heritage High school and the community. This park was designed for mountain bikes, and provides special trails for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.
Lynchburg history can be explored with a visit to Lynchburg Museum. Visitors will be intrigued with the two floors of displays in five separate galleries of artifacts. The history of the city is told through the displays, including Lynchburg’s beginning on the James River, its growth into one of the country’s most wealthy due to the tobacco industry and Lynchburg’s part in the Civil War.
