The Forestdale neighborhood is nestled in a wooded area southwest of Lynchburg, Virginia. This was the site chosen by Thomas Jefferson when he built his private retreat in this area in 1806. The home, named Poplar Forest, can be found just off of Graves Mills Road. The original plantation, covering 4,800 acres, was his getaway from Monticello for 20 years. The home is one of only two designed and built by Jefferson and the first in the country erected in the shape of an octagon. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970 and has been open for visitors since 1986 as a historical museum with hands-on displays for children.
Outdoor activities are prevalent all over the Lynchburg area. Forestdale residents enjoy golfing at nearby Poplar Forest Golf Club where they can play nine holes of golf and have access to a driving range and lessons. Those who want to enjoy Lynchburg’s bike trails and do not have a bike can take advantage of the Dasani Blue Bike’s program. This free program provides local residents the use of 20 adult Trek Classic Cruiser bicycles to travel the nine miles of paved trails on the Blackwater Creek Bikeway and James River Heritage Trail System. To register for a Dasani Blue Bike check-out card, just go to the customer service desk at the Miller Center, 301 Grove Street. Just be aware that these are single-speed bikes, and you may have to walk part of the trail.
Forestdale residents often visit The Blue Ridge Parkway, just a short distance west of the community. Visitors can stop at various sites that have actual homes and agricultural artifacts displayed in the various time periods of the early settlers of the area. Cherokee traditions are also displayed.
