Southeast of downtown Lynchburg, Tennessee, is the neighborhood of Beverly Hills. It is a rectangular neighborhood and consists of single and two-story homes with lots of trees. Beverly Hills is nearby to U.S. Route 501 and U.S. Route 291.
Schools nearby include Heritage High School, Brookville High School and Liberty Christian Academy. The Central Virginia Governor’s School for Science and Technology offers science and mathematics courses for high school juniors and seniors. Students participating in the program attend these classes in the morning then return to their home high school in the afternoon for their other courses.
Macado’s Restaurant and Bar specializes in sandwiches, subs, and a wide variety of entrees. The décor here has a cartoonish, nostalgic, and antique flavor to it that is popular with its regular customers.
Anne Spencer was a hugely popular Harlem Renaissance Poet. Her cottage home, called Edan Kraal, still contains many of her furniture, correspondence, books, and personal effects. Her garden provided her with much of the inspiration behind her poetry. The museum is open by appointment only.
Fort Early is part of a series of earthen walls that were constructed by Confederate troops during the Civil War to protect the city of Lynchburg. The building on site explains the fort’s construction and has various maps and displays pertaining to the period.
The 1,800 acre Appomattox Court House National Historic Park still has many of the original 19th-century buildings that bore witness to the events on April 9, 1865 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. The park hosts history presentations and occasional re-enactments.
