Tom’s Creek is a neighborhood located in Blacksburg. It is part of Montgomery County and backs to the Jefferson National Forest. The forest is 19,300 acres in size and offers countless recreational opportunities. Visitors enjoy fishing, camping, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, picnicking, swimming, biking, and cross-country skiing. There are also ample wildlife watching areas.
The neighborhood of Tom’s Creek is roughly bordered by Highway 460, Glade Road, and State Route 685. The area has several small housing developments and many single-family residences on acreage. It is mainly residential. Home styles include Colonial Revival, Victorian, American Four Square, Classical, and Craftsman.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, which is more commonly known as Virginia Tech, is located only two miles from the neighborhood of Tom’s Creek. The school was founded in 1872 and is a well-known research university. It also has the largest full-time student population in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Tom’s Creek Park is on nine acres of open space and features a lighted softball fields, picnic tables, bleachers, restroom facilities, playground equipment, and swings. The neighborhood is also near Roanoke’s Center in the Square, which is home to the O. Winston Link Museum, the Mill Mountain Theater, Roanoke’s Ballet Theater, Roanoke’s Opera, History Museum of Western Virginia, the Art Beyond Center, and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture.
The neighborhood of Tom’s Creek is only a short commute from several shopping and dining options. Montgomery County schools that serve the community include Kipps Elementary School, Blacksburg Middle School, and Blacksburg High School.
