The neighborhood of Murphy is located in Blacksburg. It is part of Montgomery County. Murphy is roughly bordered by Patrick Henry Drive, North Main Street, Giles Road, and Grove Avenue. It is mainly residential and populated with single-family homes, but there are a few businesses and commercial properties in the area. These include North Main Animal Hospital, Carlton Family Medicine, and Heartstrings Pet Lodging and Spa.
Murphy is conveniently located near many restaurants like the Food Lion, the Chinese Kitchen, Roma’s Pizza, and the Carol Lee Doughnut Shop. The Patrick Henry Shopping Centre is located just west of the neighborhood. The shopping center offers even more dining and shopping options.
Nearby parks include Tom’s Creek Park, which consists of acres of open spaces featuring a lighted softball field, bleachers, restroom facilities, picnic tables, and playground equipment. Blacksburg Municipal Park features lots of open space in which to run, playground equipment, tennis courts, and an old caboose to explore.
History buffs will enjoy the area’s historic areas. The Lyric Theatre is nearby and since 1998 has been showing films to moviegoers. The theater originally opened in 1929 and has since been renovated. It is a blend of Art Deco and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.
The Blacksburg Museum offers visitors an intriguing look at the neighborhood’s past residents. Another must-see stop for history lovers is the Smithfield Plantation. It was built by Revolutionary War veteran William Preston in 1774 and has since been placed on the National Registry for Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. It is also a Preservation Virginia Property.
