Mountain View, like all of Blacksburg, offers a high quality of life. It encompasses 0.547 square miles of zip code 24060 and is located to the east of South Main Street (US Highway 460), between downtown Blacksburg and Grissom Highland. Because of its clean, quiet location and easy commute, Mountain View is an appealing neighborhood.
While Blacksburg is a historic town with the oldest, still standing house, dating back to 1840, the majority of the homes in Mountain View were built from 1950 to 1970. During that time, Highway 460 started attracting automobile-oriented progress. Motor courts, gas stations, and restaurants followed in its footsteps along South Main Street. Yet, some of the streets of Mountain View, especially adjoining the downtown sector along Main Street, preserve their historic charm.
The Gables Shopping Center is still an easy destination for residents to get their daily needs. Across the street, the newer Lowes Shopping Center offers additional store options and places for a quick bite to eat. Rental units are very well maintained, yet costs are lower than the Blacksburg average. Apartment buildings and condos mostly offer between four and six rooms.
While the neighborhood of Mountain View at Blacksburg is mostly mid-century modern, it also still retains the landmark it was named after: the Amiss Palmer House, also known as Mountain View. This two-story brick house was built in 1856 in the Greek Revival style reminiscent of Blacksburg, Virginia.
The education opportunities for Mountain View in Blacksburg include schools from public and private sectors with a small community feel. In addition, Blacksburg is home to Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). This is a very reputable institution of higher education with a successful football team and many other opportunities.
