Far West Side Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
The Far West Side neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas spreads from west of the city center to the north, across the city’s inner and exterior loops.
Lackland Air Force Base sits at the southeastern corner of this neighborhood, closest to central San Antonio. This base is considered to be the “gateway to the Air Force.” All enlisted members receive basic military training here. The base is generally only open to the public sector on the second Tuesday of each month, when it offers a two-hour tour for those who sign up at least two weeks in advance. Groups of 10 or more may also request tours specifically for their group. Other visitors must be sponsored by a member of the military.
The northernmost tip of the Far West Side touches the southernmost point of Government Canyon Park, at Galm Road. Government Canyon State Natural Area is a beautiful maze of canyons and rugged hills filled with lush greenery, and a great place to escape the busy city. Amateur conservationists will find Government Canyon fascinating, as the lush greenery is watered by springs rising from San Antonio’s crucial lifeline to survival, the Edwards Aquifer.
A San Antonio minor league baseball team, the San Antonio Missions, calls the Far West Side home at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. This stadium seats to approximately 10,000 people. Also known as Wolff Stadium, it is an occasional host to the Texas League All-Star Game.
Several shopping centers serve the area, including Westover Marketplace, Stevens Ranch, and Westlakes Shopping Center. Much of this area is in the developmental stages and expected to retain continued growth as more shops, homes, parks and facilities spring up.
