Lackland Terrace Neighborhood in San Antonio, TX

Lackland Terrace Neighborhood

The Lackland Terrace neighborhood is conveniently located just north of Lackland Air Force Base. It lies between Marbach Road to the north, Interstate 410 to the west, West Military Drive to the east and U.S. Highway 90 to the south. Interstate 410 serves as a loop around the city, making it possible to get to just about any part of the city with considerable ease.

Homes in the Lackland Terrace area are single-family residences, almost all of which are one-story structures. Since they are not large, they are ideal for young couples, especially military couples, or small families. They generally range in size from about 1,000 square feet to just under 2,000 square feet. Most were built in the early to mid 1960s, with a few having been built between 1999 and 2001.

Lackland Air Force Base serves as the center for basic training for Air Force recruits. Also, it is home to the Defense Language Institute English Language Center and the Inner-American Air Forces Academy for International Students.

San Antonio Missions National Park is a short drive away. It is an important place because it shows that the city and the city’s history began around 1716 or 1718 when Franciscans and some Spanish representatives established the first mission. Four missions were established along the San Antonio River in this area during the 18th century. They are San Jose, San Juan, Espada and Concepcion.

These missions serve as a reminder of Spain’s attempt to expand its domination of the New World beyond Mexico. Their goal was to acculturate and Christianize the native residents of the area and turn them into Spanish citizens. This area is also important because it represents the greatest concentration of Catholic missions in North America. These missions laid the foundation for the creation, development and expansion of San Antonio into what it is today.

Other important sites at the park include the Espada Dam and Aqueduct, the acequia (irrigation) systems and the Rancho de las Cabras.
