Dunbar is a community that surrounds Dunbar Park in the city of San Marcos. San Marcos, the gateway to the beautiful rugged hills of the Texas Hill Country, was founded on the shores of the spring-fed San Marcos River and is located on Interstate Highway 35, between Austin and San Antonio, Texas.

Dunbar is surrounded by major roads like Farm-to-Market Road 2439, South Guadalupe Street/Loop 82, and a little farther away, Interstate Highway 35, which goes to Austin and Dallas, among other cities. A couple of minutes’ drive away is San Marcos Intermodal Station, which provides both rail by Amtrak’s system and bus by Greyhound transportation to other towns and cities. The CART (Capital Area Rural Transportation System) is a public transportation system that connects different counties and rural areas. San Marcos CAT provides a municipal bus service with fixed routes to some major destinations like Factory Outlet Malls or many school campuses in the area, and it operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District oversees elementary, middle, and high school education in this area. Higher education is provided by the Texas State University, and Gary Job Corps 0-cost education and career technical training program is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Dunbar Park is part of the city’s 246-acre park system. Residents can enjoy their favourite outdoor activities like fishing, scuba-diving, rowing, jogging, swimming, or tubing.

The focal point of San Marcos historic downtown is The Square, laid out in 1851, where Texas State students get together to let their hair down, and which was also the center of a multi-million dollar restoration project.
