Sitting northwest of downtown Midland, San Jacinto Place is a small neighborhood alongside West Golf Course Road. On the southwestern end along Maberry Street is a favorite haunt of former President George W Bush, Cowden Park. This urban green space offers a baseball field and the chance to hear a chorus of song from the resident frogs after it rains.
Mostly residential, the area is one of the oldest in Midland with homes dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. Most of the development occurred between 1940 and 1969 and was primarily single-family houses. Construction since then has added duplexes and apartments to the mix in either small buildings or larger complexes. Most of this area is sophisticated, rather artsy and pedestrian friendly.
San Jacinto High School is two blocks away on North N Street and the closest public primary is Sam Houston Elementary School on West Louisiana Avenue to the south. Private schools include the Grace Lutheran Early Childhood on West Golf Course Road and Midland Christian High School on Culver Drive to the north. Calvary Christian Fellowship and Providence Presbyterian Church are both off of Princeton Avenue on the western side of Cowden Park.
San Jacinto Place is surrounded by a triangle of streets that make up the business zone. Most of the nearby restaurants are along Andrews Highway which makes up the bottom part of that triangle. Among the offerings are Quiznos, Alfredo’s by Paleteria Mexican, and Rosa’s Café and Tortilla Factory. The Midland Memorial Hospital and the Village Shopping Center are on the southeastern tip of the triangle, at the intersection of West Illinois Avenue and North Garfield Street. E-Z Rider transit offers service to San Jacinto Place.
