Park Place is right next door to former President George W Bush’s favorite park. Built in a natural hollow, Cowden Park is considered the neighborhood ballpark. It has its own almost-vintage grassy diamond and spectator benches. Cowden Park also has a reputation of having some of the loudest frogs within city limits. One good rainstorm and the chorus begins. This neighborhood is just west of downtown Midland and north of Midland Memorial Hospital.
Quieter than the downtown core, Park Place is one of Midland’s older neighborhoods with most of the homes built between 1940 and 1970. Most of these are single-family homes. Later some of the larger homes were converted to apartments. In the latest development stage, after 1995, more small and large apartment buildings and complexes were added. Most of the area is pedestrian friendly and there is frequent service along the Andrews Highway, North Garfield Street, and West Golf Course Road from the E-Z Rider transit system.
Schools in the area include Houston Elementary on West Louisiana Avenue and Midland Excel Campus, Eagle Academy of Midland, and Midland High School all on West Illinois Avenue. Midland Christian High School is just north of Park Place on Culver Drive. The closest churches are Calvary Christian Fellowship on Ward Street and Providence Presbyterian on Princeton Avenue.
Most of the restaurants and shops are along the Andrews Highway on the southern edge of Park Place. Albertsons market is at West Cuthbert Avenue at Andrews Highway and only two blocks away. Wells Fargo Bank and several restaurants including Wendy’s, Whataburger, and Rose’s Café & Tortilla Factory are all on Andrews Highway and a two-block walk.
